My Approach & Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapy (OT) is a client-centered approach that focuses on helping individuals with chronic illnesses to engage in meaningful activities and routines that support their overall health and well-being. By working with an Occupational Therapist, individuals can develop the skills and strategies needed to manage their chronic illness and live a fulfilling life.

OT can support and provide numerous benefits for chronic illness management, including improving physical and cognitive function, increasing independence and self-care, and reducing pain and fatigue. Through tailored exercise programs, adaptive equipment and environmental modifications, OT can help individuals with chronic illness to manage their symptoms and maintain their quality of life.

OT can also help individuals develop coping strategies for managing stress, anxiety, and depression. By teaching relaxation techniques, mindfulness practices, and cognitive-behavioral strategies, OT can help individuals to manage their emotions and improve their mental health.

Assessment:

From our Discovery Call and Evaluation, we isolate the areas of need to achieve the goals of whole body wellness along with maintenance and prevention of systemic/chronic illness. We will look at and identify the Antecedents, Triggers and Mediators and address them through optimization of modifiable lifestyle factors. Together can bring your body to a place where we can maximize your wellnesses potential. 

Adaptation:

Adaptation is insight on how we can change your environment to support your goals in the least restrictive way to allow maximum independence with activities that are most valuable to you.

Application:

This is the place where we look at how to uniquely apply our adaptation strategies within the context of your life, needs and values. There is not just one right way to perform a task. I walk with you to find the strategies that are the best fit for you. The when and how these adapted activities fit into your routine are unique and personal. We will explore how you can start to develop habits for long term success. This is the point where we get to see the art of medicine shine. It is not hard to tell someone they should do something to be healthier, and most people already know what they should be doing. Shaping and molding the application of the task so it is approachable, accessible and attainable is an art, and can only be done together as a team. 

ASSIMILATION: 

This is the ultimate goal. This is the point where you don’t even realize you are making a healthy change anymore, it’s just part of your life! This is where all the education and effort leaves and these changes just become part of your lifestyle. Habituation makes this part of your daily life without extra effort or thought. It is where all your hard work really pays off and you can appreciate your unique journey to a healthier you!
